How to Enroll in Medicare
Turning 65, retiring soon, or newly eligible for Medicare?
When to Enroll in Medicare
- Born on the first of the month? You have a 7-month window to sign up for Medicare. This period begins four months before the month you turn 65 and ends two months after your birth month. Example: If your date of birth is July 1st, the window to enroll on Medicare is March 1st to September 30th.
- Born on the second of the month or later? You have a 7-month window to sign up for Medicare. This period begins three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after. Example: If your date of birth is July 2nd, the window to enroll is on Medicare is April 1st to October 31st.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):
Medicare General Enrollment Period (GEP)
If you miss your initial enrollment period, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B during the GEP, which is from January 1 to March 31 every year. Your Medicare coverage will begin the month after enrollment. Unless you had creditable coverage, you may have to pay a Late Enrollment Penalty (LEP).
Special Enrollment Periods:
These periods allow you to enroll outside the usual times under certain circumstances, such as losing other insurance coverage like an employer group health plan.

If you or your spouse worked for a railroad, call the Railroad Retirement Board at 1-877-772-5772
Create an online account at www.ssa.gov
